This milestone obelisk commemorates the erection of Richmond Bridge and is a Grade II listed building. The inscription on its west face states: "The First Stone of this Bridge was laid 23 August 1774 and Finished December 1777". Inscriptions on the other faces give distances to London Bridge, Windsor and other local destinations.
I have lived in the borough for over twenty years and only discovered this obelisk during the recent lockdown.
History is always around us but sometimes we just don’t see it, even when it’s staring us in the face!
