St Helens Fort which was competed in 1878 is one of the solent forts - often known as "Palmerston's Follies" - which were built in response to a French invasion scare under Louis Napoleon III. The Fort is 1km away from the shore meaning the only way to capture it this close is by boat or on the once a year walk when the tide is at its most extreme low
