The Acropolis of Athens by Daniel Burton

The Acropolis of Athens

"The Heart of Attica"

The iconic citadel simply known as the Acropolis sits atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the city of Athens, Greece. The Athenian king Pericles is credited with the site’s construction in the 5th century BC and the famous buildings visible today date from this period. Perhaps the best view is from Filopappou Hill, where the Parthenon towers majestically over the ancient capital. The rainbow in this photograph, from February 2019, aptly cuts through the Propylaea: the gateway to the Acropolis.
