Shangane, Mogadishu, Somalia by David R. Tunnicliffe

Shangane, Mogadishu, Somalia

From early 1981 until the end of 1983 I served at the British Embassy, Mogadishu as Cultural Attache. In the closing months of my time there I was engaged by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage to capture the ancient dwellings of Shangane and Hamad Weyne. The corpus of this work is now housed in the photographic Archive of The British Museum. Much of this area of the old town was destroyed during the Civil War in the 1980s which led to the collapse of Somalia’s central government in 1991.
