Durham Cathedral, City of Durham by Elaine Vizor

Durham Cathedral, City of Durham

Durham Cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of Durham is a World Heritage Site and dates back to 1093 for the commencement of its first phase of building, to house the remains of St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. England’s first historian, the Venerable Bede is also entombed here. I chose this image of Phoebe, aged 5, enjoying making her own photographic record of the Lego model of the cathedral as it symbolises the accessibility of history to all ages. The 300000 brick model has captured the attention of children (and adults) and made history and culture accessible to new generations. The Lego Cathedral is the peg on which future interest and learning will hang. What a fabulous idea!
