This is one of the entrances leading to the Jewish quarters ( ghetto) in Venice. although the there are two main bridges to gain access to the area known as Cannaregio. The Venetian Ghetto was an area established in 1516 where the Jewish population could live segregated from the rest of the city and is the oldest Ghetto in the world. In 1797 the French army commanded by general Napoleon Bonapart conquered Venice and ended the Ghetto's separation from the rest of the city. Venice has an amazing and colorful history dating back to around the 6th century BC where various tribes settled near the lagoon on the banks of the various tributaries. Some of the earliest know tribes were from Greece. Around 300BC the Romans came and conquered Venice The first settlers built wooden huts suspended on stilts. The supposed date for the founding of Venice was 412 AD ( St Marks Day)
