Mussenden Temple was built in 1783 and was originally designed as a library. It stands majestically on the cliff edge not far from the ruins of Downhill castle on the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol. The architecture was inspired by the temple of Vesta in Tivoli near Rome Italy. It is dedicated to the bishops Cousin Frideswide Mussenden. Michael Palin described the train journey between Derry and Coleraine as one of the most beautiful journeys in the world which goes through the tunnel directly below Mussenden Temple.
