Abba Daniel Korkor, Tigray, Ethiopia

To get to this rock-hewn church involved a two hour scramble with a guide and two local mountain assistants, who at one stage had to harness me up, attach me to a rope and drag/climb me up a sheer cliff face. All the while regaling me with stories of 70 year old Ethiopian grannies who free-climb up to weddings and funerals in the still functioning, 800 year old church. This photograph of the 80 year old caretaker, Tesfa Silassie, was one of my scariest ever: I was sitting on a two-metre wide ledge, with a 500m drop right behind me.
