Rievaulx Abbey by John Barnes

Rievaulx Abbey

Rievaulx was built as a centre of reform in the north by the order of Cistercian monks. More than 80 monasteries were built from 1128 with Rievaulx being established in 1132. Life was hard for the monks as the order insisted on poverty and simplicity with everyone taking on manual labour. The Cistercians are closely linked to the Knights Templar as soldiers of Christ.
