Rievaulx Abbey, near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, England

Lighting is everything in photography and seizing an opportunity when it presents itself can reap rewards. This image was captured driving back to Teesside one evening in May and seeing a spectacular sunset over Helmsley I swung off the main road with the idea of capturing the ruins of the monastery with the sunset behind. Unfortunately I'd not taken into account the steep sides of the valley would obscure the sunset. Flying through the village with the light fading by the second, I left the car with the engine running and caught this image as the very last rays of sunlight caught the ruin of the abbey church. A moment later and it was all over and the buildings were lost in shadow.
