Bodiam Castle, East Sussex, England by Leigh (Bella) St John

Bodiam Castle, East Sussex, England

Built in 1385, Bodiam Castle is a stunningly picturesque building (or ruins thereof) reminiscent of knights in shining armour and romantic fairy tales.

While the battles and sieges to which the castle has been witness have not been of any huge importance, the main historical significance of this building from my perspective lies in the fact that around the end of the Victorian Era when many buildings were being demolished, Lord Curzon stated "so rare a treasure [as Bodiam Castle] should neither be lost to our country nor desecrated by irreverent hands" and went to great lengths to acquire and then preserve what remained; and upon his death was donated to The National Trust.
