Bodiam castle, Robertsbridge, East Sussex by Matthew Champion

Bodiam castle, Robertsbridge, East Sussex

Originally built in the 1390s for Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, Bodiam Castle was the original 'dream retirement home' for an old soldier. Although its fortifications look formidable, including the state-of-the-art gun-loops, they were largely only for show, with the focus of the building being on comfort and entertainment. Even the moat, which looks to be a difficult obstacle to cross, is in fact only a few feet deep. However, it would still have been unwise to enter even the shallow moat - as over thirty of the castles toilets drained directly into it.
