The Doolough Memorial by Matthew Woodhouse

The Doolough Memorial

A large cross erected in the beautiful Doolough Valley, Co Mayo. The cross was erected in memory of the 400-600 men, women and children who perished on this exact road in one night during the Great Famine of Ireland. Usually a beautiful backdrop accompanies this cross but on this particular day it was very misty, windy and heavy rain, which when converted to B&W really adds to the eerie feeling that this valley has. The people were all buried along the roadsides, with no grave or marker.
