Christ Church Spitalfields, 1714-29

This view of Christ Church from Brushfield Street is a classic perspective. I have included the scaffolding and hoardings of the new building on the corner of Commercial Street to illustrate the changing scene in Spitalfields. Central to the macabre tale of human sacrifice and horrible murder in Peter Ackroyd’s time-shifting mystery, “Hawksmoor”, the Church remains enigmatic in the midst of the gentrification of the area.
