Market Hall, Accrington
Accrington’s Market Hall dates from 1869 and is typical of the civic pride of that era in the industrial North West. The Hall has been carefully restored in recent years, with installations and information points inside telling the story of the Accrington Pals, alongside the stalls and cafes. The Accrington Pals was one of many “pals” battalions raised at the start of WW1, made up of local volunteers from all walks of life. In its first major action, the battalion suffered devastating losses in the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. I took the picture straight square on, with no frills to try honour in my own small way the bravery and loyalty of those young men.
