War Memorial, Oakhill Park, Accrington
The sculpture, “Maternity” on the War Memorial in Accrington’s Oakhill Park commemorates the The Accrington Pals. The Pals was one of many volunteer battalions raised at the start of WW1, made up of people from the same town and from all walks of life. In its first major action, the battalion suffered devastating losses in the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. The Memorial in the picture was erected on the sixth anniversary of that terrible day. I was born and brought up in Accrington and often pondered on the meaning of the war memorial. On a recent visit I was struck by the number of new memorials and information points around the town, a town that will not forget them.
