Anfiteatro di Pompeii by Thomas Southgate

Anfiteatro di Pompeii

I am an amateur photographer who enjoys capturing landscapes both natural and man made. This has led me to develop a particular interest in landscapes of historic and heritage significance.

I love to travel to different cities and try to capture their cultures and history through photography. My submitted image is of a passageway network within the Anfiteatro di Pompeii. Roman history has a romance and excitement about it. On walking through Pompeii's equivalent to the Coliseum, I was taken by the simply beauty and form of this passageway, and the way the light fell into the space from the main arena. I was immediately transfixed by the stories of all who have walked along it, and whether it was used to shelter from the volcanic eruption that ultimately destroyed the city.
